SLIDE SCANNING
Why scan?
Slides will deteriorate over time. Colors fade, film emulsions break down and other surface defects will affect the image quality. Our scanning process will correct the effects of fading and surface defects.
Organize your entire photographic collection on CD or DVD.
Protect your photo history from disasters such as fire and floods by having digital backup copies in different locations.
Slides that are stored in damp areas are susceptible to mold. These require photo restoration, a service we also provide.
Having your pictures in a Digital format is the easiest way to share your pictures. They can be sent by e-mail, posted on your web site, printed, displayed in slideshows, computer screensavers and PowerPoint presentations. Personal photos also make great cards and gifts for family and friends.
Digital Technologies
Digital ICE (Image Correction & Enhancement) technology removes surface defects instantaneously without altering the underlying image. The award-winning Digital ICE distinguishes itself from software-only solutions because it does not soften, blur or otherwise alter any underlying details and composition of the original image. Instead, Digital ICE technology works from within the scanner itself, during the scanning process to provide the user with a clear authentic base image that generally improves on the original image.
Digital ROC ( Reconstruction of Colour) technology works to restore the colour quality of an image, regardless of the condition of the original. Digital ROC technology “reads” the dye signature present in colour film and slides, using a complex set of proprietary algorithms. The degree of colour restoration depends on the visibility of the image’s dye record. In the end, Digital ROC technology will always restore some of the original colour, despite extensive colour deterioration.

Image Formats
JPG images are compressed, so they require less space to store, thereby allowing more images to be saved onto a CD or DVD. If you are not going to modify the image, then JPG images are fine for viewing or printing. JPG images are also the best choice for email. Pictures saved as TIF files are considerably larger, but they can be opened, modified and resaved without any loss of quality. Side by side comparison of a high quality JPG and TIF file will be indistinguishable which is why most of our customers request JPG images.
CD or DVD?
If you have a DVD player on your computer, then having your images on DVD will allow you to save more images per disk. But on the other hand, saving your images to CD will allow you to view your JPG images on most home DVD players. We can also create a slideshow video with an audio background on a DVD that will play on your home DVD, but it does not allow you to access the image files from your computer. You can choose to have both CD and DVD at a small additional charge.

Viewing your images
Images stored on CD or DVD are read only and must be copied to your computer’s hard drive before editing. They may be opened directly from the CD or DVD using most image viewing software.
Not all DVD players are the same. Newer models will play Audio CDs, MP3 files and display JPG’s from a CD while some older may only play movie DVDs. It is best to check with the documentation for your model of DVD player.
Computer DVD players can view JPEG images on either DVD or CD.
The best image quality will be achieved by viewing the images as JPEG instead of video format. So if you wish to view the images on your home DVD player to view on your TV, you should choose to have the images saved onto a CD.
It is a good idea to have your images stored on a DVD that you can keep as a backup copy , and then make a few CD copies to view your pictures.
E-mailing your images
Due to the high scanning resolution, image files may be over 5 MB in size. Before emailing as an attachment, image size should be reduced. Refer to your email client documentation on how to do this.
Shipping your slides, negatives and photographs
You can deliver your slides personally or ship them to us. If you send your slides, make sure they are carefully packed in a moisture proof container. Slide trays and carousels are OK, as well as small boxes and binders. Group slides so that when they are scanned they are saved into separate folders. Identify the different groups by either numbering the slides and listing the numbers for each group, or divide the slides with markers. When preparing slides, the different formats will be separated as each requires a different scan setup.
You should protect your slides with a moisture proof container. Please send your slides via Courier or Priority Mail.
If you are sending 35mm film strips, identify the images that you want scanned.
We ship them back to you along with the number of CD’s or DVD’s copies that you requested.
How long does the scanning process take?
Most large orders are processed and returned within 10 days to two weeks. Smaller orders can be done in a few days to a week, depending on our current work load.
